_______

If there’s one thing I know, young children love playing with animal figurines. And in the realm of animals, dinosaurs are among their favorite. Setting up these fascinating creatures in a lighted dinosaur small world adds interest to their play.

_______

Follow me on Pinterest for more early learning ideas.

_______

Supplies To Collect

The following easy-to-find supplies are in the dinosaur small world setup:

  • dinosaur figurines
  • artificial grass panels
  • artificial palm branches
  • wood slabs
  • small logs
  • small rocks
  • fillable eggs
  • marbles
  • blue placemat
  • sturdy blue paper
  • table cover
  • stage light

_______

The Lighted Dinosaur Small World

_______

This dinosaur-themed setup works perfectly on a table, or in an active world tray. I chose to decorate the table with a gold table cover. It fits the natural color scheme and works well with a professional stage light.

Artificial grass panels and palm branches provide ample ground cover for the dinosaur figurines.

_______

Small rocks, logs, and wood slices add nature pieces to the play invitation.

Fillable eggs and marbles are the dinosaur eggs, from which babies can hatch from.

_______

Curved lines cut from around the edge of a blue placemat or sturdy piece of paper provide a pond and add a dose of color to the scene.

_______

Shining a professional stage light on the display adds interest and beauty to the play invitation. The idea was inspired a stunning dinosaur display at a local museum.

_______

This string painting snake art is perfect for a reptile theme. In addition to enhancing the topic of snakes, it offers children a novel way to paint.

_______

Follow me on Pinterest for more early learning ideas.

_______

Supplies To Collect

_______

Gather the following supplies for this simple string painting activity:

  • sturdy paper
  • tempera paint
  • small disposable plates
  • yarn
  • scissors
  • clothespins
  • spoons
  • waterproof table cover

_______

Preparing The String Painting Snake Art Activity

To set up this novel string art activity, cover a table with a waterproof table cover.

Then spoon tempera paint into small disposable plates.

Next, cut the yarn into lengths about 6 to 8 inches long.

Afterward, attach a clothespin to the end of each strip of yarn.

Set the paint dishes, prepared string, and sturdy pieces of paper onto the art table and the activity is ready to go.

_______

The String Painting Snake Art Project

_______

To create snake-like painted shapes, lay a string on a paint-filled plate, draping the clothespin attached end over the edge.

Use a spoon to press down on the string to ensure it is covered in paint.

Next, carefully lift off the string and lay it on the paper in a snake-like, serpentine pattern.

Then gently put the string back in the same color of paint.

Repeat the process with more paint colors to create snakes in additional hues.

_______

Variations of the String Art Project

After participants have completed a snake art project, invite them to explore more string painting techniques:

  • Dragging the string across the paper covers it more quickly, and allows for paint mixing.
  • Using fingers to manipulate the string instead of clothespins adds a tactile experience.
  • Experimenting with thick and thin string, and longer and shorter pieces creates different effects.
  • Spooning paint on the paper first, and dragging the string through it is another way to paint.

A reptile active world tray is a great way to introduce animals such as snakes, lizards, and turtles to young children. Having a chance to explore these reptiles in a small world helps alleviate fears surrounding these scaly animals.

_______

Follow me on Pinterest for more early learning ideas.

_______

Supplies To Collect

_______

The following supplies are in the reptile active world tray:

  • snake, lizard, frog, and insect figurines
  • fillable eggs
  • artificial palm branches and grass panels
  • wood logs and slices
  • recycled toilet paper and paper towel rolls

A large active world tray nicely holds a few artificial grass panels and the other sensory supplies. A bus tub or round saucer are good sensory tray bin alternatives.

Various-sized snake and lizard figurines add variety to the tray.

Frog and insect figurines serve as prey for the snakes and lizards to eat.

Toilet paper and paper towel rolls make perfect hollow logs for snakes to hide in.

_______

Fillable eggs are just the right size for tiny lizard hatchlings and snakelets to break out of.

Artificial palm branches provide ground cover.

And wood logs, wood slices, and rocks add natural elements to the reptile active world tray.

Adorable turtle Christmas paper craft inspired by the delightful picture book "Mossy" by author Jan Brett.

_______

This cheeky turtle Christmas craft is inspired by Jan Brett’s beautiful picture book titled “Mossy.” The colorful papercraft is easy to make, especially if you download the free printables below.

In the story, an eastern box turtle named Mossy is scooped up from a pond area and taken to a museum by biologist Dr. Carolina. Mossy is unique…she has a lush garden of moss and flowers growing on her shell due to the moist home she grew up in. At the museum, Mossy is given an impressive glass-encased place to live, and her carapace garden continues to grow. Many visitors come to view Mossy, and she makes the museum famous. But over time, Mossy grows very sad. She misses her pond home, and especially her new friend Scoot, who she had just met before being captured. Dr. Carolina’s niece Tory notices how sad Mossy gets. Eventually, a portrait of Mossy in her pond environment is made for the museum, and the garden-decorated turtle is released back to the same place where she was found.

Jan Brett’s artwork in the picture book is as exquisite as usual. And the illustrated borders on pages feature creatures and artifacts commonly found in museums, such as flowers, insects, butterflies, fossils, tree parts, algae, geodes, and feathers.

Turtle Pond Sensory Bin

Easy to sert up nature-based tutle pond sensory bin.

_______

Why debut a turtle pond sensory bin, eggs included, in fall? Because although we generally associate spring as the time for baby animals to be born, many turtle hatchlings peck out of their shells in autumn.

And…because I have a light-up “toss and dive” turtle set that I’ve longed to use for over two years! I never stored it in a permanent spot because I was always planning to do a pond activity “very soon.” But with so many fantastic curriculum ideas to choose from every week, “soon” never came.

So this September as I was reorganizing storage areas, I noticed the colorful turtles once again. I googled “turtles in fall” to see how I could use them alongside typical fall themes such as leaves, pumpkins, bats, and spiders. Finding that turtle eggs and hatchlings are part of the fall season motivated me to include the diving turtles in a sensory activity at this time.

_______

Ten Turtle Reproduction Facts

  • Although turtles spend a lot of time in water, nearly all lay their eggs on land.
  • Many turtles lay a clutch of eggs in about 3 – 6 weeks after mating.
  • Mother turtles dig a nest in sandy or wet dirt with their hind legs. They cover the eggs laid in the nest with soil and plants.
  • Depending on turtle size and species, there can be from 5 to 100 eggs in a clutch.
  • Most turtles don’t guard their nests, leaving right afterwards.
  • It takes the baby turtles two to three months to hatch.
  • Most hatch in autumn, pecking their way out with an egg tooth.
  • These fall babies often stay in the nest through winter and emerge the following spring.
  • They survive their first winter by not eating and living on their own fat reserves. Some can handle cold temperatures and may even produce a sort of antifreeze.
  • Only a few turtles survive to adulthood. Turtle eggs and hatchlings have many predators.

Turtle Pond Supplies To Collect

Loose parts for a turtle-themed sensory bin.

_______

A turtle-themed sensory bin can be set up very quickly with the following supplies:

  • kitchen supply bus bin
  • turtle figurines
  • rocks of varying sizes
  • small logs or twigs
  • gemstone slices
  • real or artificial leaves
  • marbles
  • small disposable food container with a ridge
  • a large piece of brown craft foam

_________

Making The Turtle Pond Sensory Bin

Nature[ based, easy to set up turtle pond sensory bin.

_______

Pour a layer of water into the bin. I used a kitchen bus bin for this activity.

Add rocks, logs, and gemstone slices.

Cut a few curves around the edge of the foam, and a hole in the middle just big enough to fit the disposable container. Float the foam in the water.

Set the disposable container in the hole to represent a turtle nest.

Add marble “eggs” to it. I used blue marbles because they were handy, but real turtle eggs are white or cream-colored.

This turtle pond sensory bin includes a sunken nest with "eggs."

_______

Surround the “nest” with a few craft or real leaves for covering the eggs up.

Add turtle figurines. Three light-up “toss and dive” turtles are the stars of this sensory bin, but any turtle figurines would be heartily welcomed by early learners.
