Polar Bear Small World

A professional stage light adds ambiance to this inviting northern lights-inspired polar bear small world.

_______

Two of the most majestic things to see in the Arctic are polar bears and northern lights. It is not uncommon to spot them depicted together in far north artworks. A memory of an award-winning painting of polar bears trekking across a snowy landscape lit up by northern lights is what inspired this lighted polar bear small world.

_______

Supplies To Collect

This polar bear small world is inspired by northern lights, which are often visible in Arctic skies at night.

_______

To set up a mesmerizing polar bear small world, gather together the following supplies:

  • polar bear figurines
  • LED stage light
  • white pompoms
  • acrylic snowflakes
  • clear acrylic ice cubes
  • silver placemat
  • turquoise placemat
  • toy igloo, ice floe, tent, and snow vehicle
  • white tablecloth
  • scissors

_______

The Polar Bear Small World

A professional stage light adds interest to this northern lights-inspired polar bear small world.

_______

To put together this polar bear-themed small world, start by covering a table with a white tablecloth to create a “snowy” base.

Next, add placemats to represent ice and water. A silver placemat suggests ice. A turquoise placemat trimmed with scissors becomes “a body of water.”

Then set up a LED stage light at one end of the table.

Afterward, add polar bear figurines, pompom “snowballs,” acrylic snowflakes, and clear ice cubes.

If available, include arctic toys such as an igloo, ice floe, research tent, and snow vehicle. These will add imaginary play possibilities to the small world.

Finally, turn on the LED stage light to illuminate the scene. You can set the stage light to one color, or have it project alternating colors such as green, blue, red, and purple.

Hockey Game Small World

This ice hockey game small world featuring an outdoor skating rink and hockey player figurines has sensory play opportunities.

_______

If you say the word “hockey”, you may think of Canada, and when you say “Canada” you may think of hockey. That’s because in the late 1800s the game of hockey was developed in Canada, and has been a popular game for Canadians to play ever since. Because I live in Canada, I’ve been dying to touch on the sport in a blog post. And this hockey game small world is a fun way to introduce the outdoor winter game to little learners.

Hockey is a lightning-fast team sport played on ice. Players wear skates and helmets, and use sticks and a small rubber disc called a puck in the game. There are usually six players on each team. One of them is the goalie, who guards their net. The other players try to shoot the puck into the opposing team’s net. If they do, their team gets one point.

Although now there are many indoor hockey rinks to play the game on, the sport was traditionally played outdoors. An outdoor backyard or pond rink is featured in this post.

_______

Supplies To Collect

Supplies to make a backyard ice skating rink small world.

_______

Here are the supplies in the hockey game small world set up:

  • rectangular or square tray
  • snow
  • hockey player figurines
  • four toy pylons
  • small black disc-shaped bead
  • evergreen sprigs
  • fence sections
  • pail, shovel, and broom accessories

_______

Assembling The Hockey Game Small World

A sensory opportunity-filled hockey game small world with real ice and snow.

_______

Freeze a layer of water in a square or rectangular tray. This will be the skating rink.

Pack snow around the edges of the tray to make snowbanks.

Add fence sections and accessories such as a pail, shovel, and broom to the snowy areas.

Stick in evergreen sprigs to serve as trees. My “trees’ are lemon cypress sprigs taken from the plant I used for Christmas Playdough.

Lay two pylons on each end of the ice to be the goalposts. If you have toy goalie nets, such as the ones that come with Playmobil hockey sets, use them instead.

Set the goalies in front of their nets. These players have wider sticks and more protective gear than their teammates, and that’s how you can distinguish them.

Arrange the rest of the players on the ice and add the bead puck. I feature a goalie and three players. If your sensory tray is large enough, add five players to each team in addition to the netminder.

_______

Invite little learners to investigate the hockey team small world tray.

The ice and snow in the tray offer sensory play opportunities. And little learners get to practice fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination when they give each hockey player a stick.

This hockey game sensory tray features real ice and snow. A link to a blog post with instant snow recipes is included.

_______

Instant Snow Options

Where I live in Alberta, there is plenty of snow for at least four months of the year. So there is little need to try any instant snow options. If you do not have snow where you reside, a blog post by Playing With Rain features six homemade snow recipes to try.

_______

Winter-themed treasure blocks add interest and beauty to any block play activity. Pick a winter color palette, scrounge around for loose parts in your chosen hues, and add them to the blocks. It’s that easy!

Treasure blocks are a fairly recent addition to my block collection, and I love adding seasonal supplies to them. There are eight see-through blocks in different sizes and shapes in the featured set, allowing various kinds of loose parts to be displayed. I highly recommend getting a set. They are so versatile.

Reptile-themed art. science, small world, and pretend play activities for early learners. Topics include snakes, turtles, and lizards.

_______

A Reptile Theme is THE WAY to encourage early learners to get more comfortable with animals such as snakes, lizards, and turtles. Little ones often have a fear of these animals, partly because of how they get depicted on television. Hands-on activities alleviate fear and encourage an interest in learning more about these creatures.

_______

Reptile Pet Store

An effective way to introduce a reptile theme is to set up a pet store pretend play center. Collect the following and display them on shelves and tables gathered for the store:

  • snake. lizard, turtle, frog, and insect figurines
  • baskets and cages
  • cash register and play money

_______

Reptile Store pretend play center. Snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, and insects for sale.

_______

_______

Cut out large, winding snakes from 12-inch x 18-inch pieces of construction paper.

Paper punch circles, squares, triangles, ovals, stars, and hexagons from bright colored cardstock.

Ask your little learners to use glue sticks to attach shapes to the snakes. Offer tiny sticker eyes for a finishing touch.

Purchased sticker foam shapes would also work well for this craft.

_______

Beaded Snakes

Early learners love using craft supplies like pony beads.

Offer pipe cleaners and a variety of pony bead colors.

Invite your early learners to string bead colors of choice on the pipe cleaners. Wrap the ends around the first beads so the rest will stay in place. Ask your little ones to stop stringing beads about 4 cm from the other end of the pipe cleaners.

Set the snakes aside and add beads to make the snake heads. Glue on tiny craft eyes.
