Paper Bag Grinch Craft

December 22, 2024 by Annette Kaminsky Leave a Comment

_______

This cute and colorful paper bag Grinch craft doubles up as an aromatic Christmas present to give to someone special over the holiday season.

It’s tradition for me to visit a nearby greenhouse during the holiday season to view the beautifully decorated Christmas trees. The trees all have gorgeous, coordinated decorations that complement each other in color and theme. The decorations are the inspiration for crafts to make. At the end of my visit, I pick out a lemon cypress plant to take home and often select other items to purchase.
.
Lemon cypress plants look like miniature Christmas trees and are often decorated with tiny ornaments as a space-saving holiday sensory activity. They have light green feathery foliage that grows in a cone shape. When the leaves are rubbed or crushed, they smell like lemon. The tip of the lemon grass plant reminds me of the tuft of hair on Dr. Seuss’s storybook character “The Grinch.” That’s why they are paired in this paper bag craft and gift.

_______

Supplies To Collect

Collect the following supplies for this Grinchy green and yellow craft:

  • lemon cypress plant
  • paper lunch bags
  • green and yellow tempera paint
  • paint pot and brush
  • yellow and black construction paper
  • red and black markers
  • scissors and pencil
  • glue stick and tape
  • yarn and single hole punch
  • waterproof tablecloth

_______

The Paper Bag Grinch Craft

To make this paper bag Grinch craft, start by pouring light green or neon green tempera paint into a paint pot.

_______

Next, set out the paint, paintbrush, and a paper bag on a table covered with a waterproof tablecloth.
Paint one side of the bag and let it dry. Paint the other three sides, allowing the paint to dry on each side before continuing. The drying process may take a few hours.

Note: An alternative is to stand the bag on the art table and place a few sheets of crumpled scrap paper inside. Paint a thin layer of tempera all over the bag and let it dry. Then remove the inserted paper.

When the painted lunch bag is dry, fold it into its original shape.

Then cut two large almond-shaped eyes from yellow construction paper and line the outside edges with a black marker.

Cut small circles from black sturdy paper and glue them to the yellow eyes.

Afterward, thoroughly add glue to the back of the crafted eyes with a glue stick, and affix the peepers to the bag in a slanted position.

_______

Next, use the black marker to draw a small nose and a deep curved mouth on the bag.

Then draw eyelashes around the eyes and give the paper bag face slanted eyebrows.

Cut a small rectangle from yellow construction paper and write the words “Merry Grinchmas” on it with a red marker.

Next, punch a hole in the edge of the paper greeting and tie on a section of yarn.

Finally, tape the yarn inside the tip of the bag and carefully set in a small potted lemon cypress plant.

_______

Variation of the Paper Bag Grinch Craft

_______

To simplify this festive craft, use a bright green crayon to color the bag instead of painting it. The green hue will not be as bright as the painted version but the craft will be just as delightful.

_______

This lemon cypress plant-filled paper bag Grinch craft would make a cute gift from a child to a parent or grandparent. Who will you give your Grinch craft to?

Merry Grinchmas!!!

Make these washi tape Christmas pots filled with festive pine cone Christmas trees.

_______

A few years ago, I purchased Christmas-themed washi tape, not yet knowing how I would use it. Craft ideas came and went, but the tape remained unused due to my busy schedule. After seeing a decorative pot in a home décor shop this past summer, I knew exactly how I would use the festive tape…in crafting washi tape Christmas pots!

With the addition of pine cone Christmas trees, the embellished pots display well on a shelf or fireplace mantle during the holiday season. And the craft is suitable for all ages, so why not get the whole family to make one!

_______

Christmas Pot Supplies To Collect

Gather the following supplies for this craft:

  • Christmas-themed washi tape
  • three-inch terracotta clay pots
  • scissors
  • large pine cone picks
  • glitter pom poms
  • small round beads
  • playdough
  • brown shredded paper
  • wire cutters
  • white glue or hot glue gun
  • glue paddles

_______

Creating the Washi Tape Christmas Pots

Steps to making washi tape Christmas-themed pots.

_______

Cut washi tape into small pieces. Stick the tape around each pot horizontally in rows. Or layer the washi tape vertically in a pattern.

Then decorated pine cone “Christmas trees” can be added to the pots:

Use wire cutters to snip the wire on each pine cone to a length that fits into the pot size of choice.

Add a ball of playdough to each pot, and stick in a pine cone pick. Then fill the pots with brown shredded paper.

Next, adhere the beads and pom poms to the pine cone trees with white glue or a hot glue gun.

Adorable turtle Christmas paper craft inspired by the delightful picture book "Mossy" by author Jan Brett.
Adorable turtle Christmas paper craft inspired by the delightful picture book "Mossy" by author Jan Brett.

_______

This cheeky turtle Christmas craft is inspired by Jan Brett’s beautiful picture book titled “Mossy.” The colorful papercraft is easy to make, especially if you download the free printables below.

In the story, an eastern box turtle named Mossy is scooped up from a pond area and taken to a museum by biologist Dr. Carolina. Mossy is unique…she has a lush garden of moss and flowers growing on her shell due to the moist home she grew up in. At the museum, Mossy is given an impressive glass-encased place to live, and her carapace garden continues to grow. Many visitors come to view Mossy, and she makes the museum famous. But over time, Mossy grows very sad. She misses her pond home, and especially her new friend Scoot, who she had just met before being captured. Dr. Carolina’s niece Tory notices how sad Mossy gets. Eventually, a portrait of Mossy in her pond environment is made for the museum, and the garden-decorated turtle is released back to the same place where she was found.

Jan Brett’s artwork in the picture book is as exquisite as usual. And the illustrated borders on pages feature creatures and artifacts commonly found in museums, such as flowers, insects, butterflies, fossils, tree parts, algae, geodes, and feathers.

Handprint angel craft in magenta and turquoise colors.
Handprint angel craft in magenta and turquoise colors.

_______

Last year’s handprint angel craft was a hit with my preschool families. So this year I set out to find a glittery Christmas stem that would inspire a variation of the well-received keepsake craft. I shopped with no preconceived ideas in mind, and at the first store, a gleaming peacock-inspired stem caught my eye. I knew immediately that it was “the one” for this year’s angel craft.

In my instructions, I use the colors magenta, turquoise, and pink, and “peacock-inspired Christmas stem.” But feel free to substitute any glittery stem and complementary colors for the craft.

_______

Supplies To Collect

  • peacock-inspired Christmas stem
  • magenta tempera paint
  • pink glitter
  • white cardstock paper
  • skin-toned cardstock paper
  • disposable plate
  • glue gun
  • scissors
