Polar Dinosaur Sensory Play

Three engaging sensory activities to explore whether dinosaurs could have survived in polar regions of the world.

_______

Could dinosaurs have survived in polar areas of the world? Since fossils of many kinds of dinosaurs have been discovered in cold, icy regions, this question has been carefully pondered. Early learners can explore this idea through polar dinosaur sensory play.

_______

Polar Dinosaur Discoveries

Northern Alaska is the best polar location to find dinosaur fossils, as fossils of many uniquely different dinosaurs have been unearthed there.

Fossils from at least eight types of dinosaurs have been discovered in Antarctica.

Dinosaur fossils have also been found in Siberia, Canada, southern Australia, New Zealand, and the southern tip of South America.

There have been discoveries of dinosaur trackways, footprints, teeth, skin impressions, and bones.

Collecting dinosaur fossils in polar regions is challenging because of the extreme weather conditions, rugged, hard to access places and difficulty in removing fossils.

_______

Polar Dinosaur Sensory Tray

A simple way to incorporate the idea of polar animals living in cold parts of the world is to set up a polar dinosaur sensory tray.

_______

Items in the tray:

  • dinosaur figurines and skulls
  • acrylic ice cubes
  • turquoise acrylic gems
  • white, cream, and blue gems
  • stones
  • cotton balls
  • snowflake confetti
  • dinosaur confetti

This is an eye-pleasing tray that is bound to draw children in. It works well for individual sensory play.

_______

Polar Dinosaur Playdough Tray

You can use most of the above items for a polar dinosaur playdough tray. I exchanged the dinosaurs for miniature ones and took out the cotton balls.

Polar Dinosaur Sensory Tube

After using snowflake and dinosaur confetti in sensory trays, sprinkle some in a large clear plastic water bottle. Then add mini dinosaur figurines and water. Set the bottle out as a sensory tube for little learners to explore.

_______

What Scientists Think About Dinosaurs and Polar Regions

Some dinosaurs could have lived in dark, chilly places, and may have hibernated in winter. Others could have adapted to the colder weather.

Still others may have migrated to polar regions in spring/summer because food was plentiful like many animals do today.

When dinosaurs roamed the earth the climate around the world was much warmer than today. Although polar lands had freezing temperatures and some snow, the weather was milder.

Fossils of leaves, pine needles, and trees show evidence that many polar areas were covered with forests when dinosaurs lived.

This Christmas tree art is quick to set up and simple to do. And it gives early learners a chance to explore color shades and brightness.

Dazzling, easy to do Christmas tree art painting activity. An all-ages art project.

_______

Supplies to Collect

  • green, yellow and white tempera paint
  • 12-inch x 18-inch sturdy paper
  • paint palettes
  • paintbrushes
  • paper towel squares
  • metallic green star confetti
  • gold and green Christmas gift bows

_______

Making The Christmas Tree Art

Cut long, narrow triangles from large sheets of sturdy paper. Shown below is manila paper.

Pour dark green, medium green, yellow, and white tempera paint into artist palettes. This color scheme works well when children keep the colors separate or do a lot of blending.

Invite your early learners to paint a triangle. They will embrace painting a unique shape.

Christmas tree art set up with white, yellow, and green paint hues.

_______

A paper towel works well to dab excess paint from the brush before switching to a new color. This is a helpful tip from Patty Palmer’s book “Draw, Paint, Sparkle.”

Painting technique to use when switching paint colors.

_______

Next, have your little charges sprinkle on metallic stars while the paint is still wet. They will loooove doing this too!

Painted triangular tree ready to be topped with a Christmas gift bow.

_______

When the tree art is dry, spray on unscented hairspray from an aerosol can to help the stars stay on. (This is the first year I searched for unscented hairspray to use as a fixative. It was worth the time and slightly greater expense.)

Lastly, have your little learners pick a Christmas gift bow to stick on top of their tree.

A Christmas gift bow is the topper for this painted Christmas tree craft.

_______

Discussing triangle shapes, using beautiful finishing touches, seeing how white added to darker green makes different shades, and noticing how yellow lightens and brightens green are some learning possibilities for this craft.

And these Christmas tree art projects look absolutely beautiful displayed together.

Frozen inspired shadow box. Invitation for children to create a scene with Frozen bathtub stickers and loose parts. An all-ages activity.

_______

This Frozen-inspired shadow box scene features neutral and cool colors and textures. The color palette is gorgeous and is relatable to my experience of winter. Your child will enjoy using similar hued loose parts to create unique shadow box scenes.

_______

Although I live in an area with a long snowy season, it hasn’t always been easy to find winter-themed play accessories. I learned that if you haven’t bought your snowmen crafts and toys before Christmas, you’ve missed your chance. And it’s hard to find snowmen décor that isn’t adorned in green and red and draped in holly.

The same goes for fake snow or any winter-themed crafts. They often go hand in hand with Christmas. And that’s in a city with a winter season that lasts through March.

So, I especially embrace the winter setting and turquoises, pinks, and purples in Frozen I. These are colors I can relate to when my city is covered in ice and snow. And the hues take center stage in this invitation to create a Frozen-inspired shadow box scene.

_______

Scissor Skill Snow Cutting Activities

Invitation to cut craft supplies to make fake snow. The snow is featured in small world and sensory activities. Scissor skill practice for early learners.

_______

A scissor skill snow cutting activity snipping craft supplies is sure to attract your child’s attention. A rich base will be created for small world and sensory activities. A bonus is that this snow will never melt or be too cold to play with.

_______

Supplies To Collect

Go on the hunt for white, neutral, and silver craft supplies:

  • strips of cardstock paper
  • packing peanuts
  • straws
  • yarn
  • tissue paper
  • crepe paper
  • foil
  • ribbon
  • cotton balls
  • bows
  • lace
  • bead garland

Also needed:

  • blunt-edged children’s scissors
  • storage tray (to hold the precut supplies)
  • small cookie sheets
White and neutral craft supply tinker tray. Scissor skill activity to create fake snow and bits and pieces for collage and sensory activities.

_______

Scissor Skill Snow Cutting Set Up

Fill a storage tray with items for cutting.

Set the tray with scraps on a table along with pairs of scissors. Invite your child to choose pieces to snip smaller over a cookie sheet. Feel free to join your child in making snow.

White and neutral craft supply cutting tray set up. Scissor skill activity to create fake snow and bits and pieces for collage and sensory activities.

_______

Encourage your child to stand and cut. Studies show that children sit down for an enormous time each day, so adding activities where they are on their feet reduces sedentary time. (View an article that cites the benefits of standing versus sitting at standupkids.org.)

The variety of materials offered facilitates scissor skills. For instance, stiffer pieces are easier to hold with the helping hand. And harder-to-cut items increase small muscle strength in the cutting hand.

This scissor skill snow cutting activity offers rich opportunities for language development.  Model and discuss descriptive words. Here are some possibilities:

Descriptive words to describe craft supplies in a snow cutting tray.

_______

Cutting practice with craft scraps offers a non-threatening way for young children to develop scissor skills. There is no wrong way to do it, so frustration is minimized. Children can experiment and cut the materials that work for them.

Early learners can start using scissors with guidance. For tips on teaching children to use scissors, view my post “Santa’s Beard Scissor Activity.”

_______

Activities With Craft Snow

Once there is a little pile of cut snow, use it in sensory and small world activities.
